Algorithms For Joint Channel Estimation and Data Recovery -Application to Equalization in Underwater Communications

چکیده
One of the main obstacles to reliable underwater acoustic communications is the relatively complex and unstable behavior of the ocean channel. The channel equalization method, that can estimate and track this complex and rapidly varying ocean response, may lead to reliable data communications at high rates which utilize fully the available bandwidth. Unfortunately, standardized equalization techniques fail in this environment. In this paper we derive methods for joint ocean-channel estimation and data recovery, using optimal, Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation criterion. The resulting ML problems may be complex; thus we will use iterative algorithms; e.g., the ExpectationMaximization (EM) algorithm. The different methods correspond to different assumptions about the ocean channel. The theoretical derivation of these methods as well as preliminary results on a simulated ocean data experiments are presented.

On the Practical Aspects of Joint Passive Phase Conjugation and Equalization Underwater Communication Systems
Underwater acoustic communication systems suffer from the channel impairments which results in time spreading of the transmitted signal. In underwater environment, multiple replicas of the transmitted signal are received at the receiver through different paths, which causes significant Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI). Decision Feedback Equalizers (DFE) was utilized to overcome this type of inte...

In this paper, we proposed a novel receiver algorithm for coherent underwater acoustic communications. The proposed receiver is composed of three parts: (1) Doppler tracking and correction, (2) Time reversal channel estimation and combining, and (3) Joint iterative equalization and decoding (JIED). To reduce computational complexity and optimize the equalization algorithm, Time reversal (TR) ch...

Joint mitigation of timeand frequency-selective fading is an important and challenging problem in mobile communications. Relying on transmitter-induced redundancy, we propose novel channel estimation and symbol recovery approaches for blind identification and equalization of timeand frequency-selective channels, where the time variation is modeled deterministically by a basis expansion. The res...

A batch blind equalization scheme is developed based on maximum likelihood joint channel and data estimation. In this scheme, the joint maximum likelihood optimization is decomposed into a twolevel optimization loop. A micro genetic algorithm is employed at the upper level to identify the unknown channel model, and the Viterbi algorithm is used at the lower level to provide the maximum likeliho...
متن کاملBlind Channel Equalization Based On Constant Power Criterion
In present Digital communications, the transmission effects such as multipath propagation and limited bandwidth produces linear distortion in the emitted signal, causing Inter symbol Interferences at the receiver sensor output. To enable the recovery of input symbols, channel equalization is used. Channel equalization is used to compensate the distortion effects happening in the wireless channe...
